title: Collections
description: Group pieces into anthologies, method books, or folders — a separate entity from an individual piece, with its own metadata and file.
---

A **collection** represents an anthology, method book, or physical folder that holds several pieces — separate from any single piece's own record, since a collection has its own publisher, catalog number, and (optionally) its own cover/table-of-contents file.

## Collection fields

Title, subtitle, publisher, editor, catalog number, quantity owned, storage location, purchase date, purchase price, purchase source, copyright status, external link, and notes — the same inventory-style fields available on a piece, but describing the collection as a whole.

## Adding pieces to a collection

From a collection's detail page:

- **Link an existing piece** — search your library and add it to the collection.
- **Create and link a piece** — add a brand-new piece without leaving the collection screen; it's created in your library and linked in one step.

Each linked piece can optionally record a **page number** (where it appears within the collection) and has a **sort order** you can drag to rearrange.

:::note
Only top-level pieces (standalone pieces and multi-movement works) can be linked to a collection — individual movements of a work can't be added on their own. See [Multi-movement works](/docs/library/multi-movement-works).

## Attaching a file to a collection

A collection can have its own attached PDF — typically a cover page or table of contents for the physical book. Pieces in the collection do not keep their own sheet music files (scores uploaded for OCR are discarded after they're read).

## Removing a piece from a collection

Unlinking a piece from a collection removes it from that collection only; the piece itself stays in your library.
